The New England Primer taught generations of children to learn the letter “A” by the rhyme “In Adam’s fall, we sinned all.”1 Likewise, the doctrine of original sin is part of the ABCs of biblical Christianity. The term original sin does not refer specifically to the first sin, but to the state of sin that plagues all of Adam’s natural descendants and is the origin of all other sins (Rom. 5:12). A related doctrine is called total depravity.
